Sweet Dreams

Molton Brown

At some point we all have trouble sleeping and I can tell you now, it really sucks. Sometimes, no matter how much you try to sleep you just can't drift off. You wake up in the middle of the night wide awake and the more you try to sleep the harder it becomes.

Trying to function on little, to no sleep, I can tell you makes even the sweetest person cranky. It can have an effect on just about everything in your life.

In this post I am not going to profess that I can cure insomnia, but I do have some beauty remedies up my sleeve that might just help.

Neal's Yard do some fantastic organic aromatherapy remedies that you can use on the go.

Neal's Yard
These little beauties I have used for years.

They come in four mood enhancing aromatherapy remedies, relaxation, travel, night time and energy. You can buy all four together for £19.50 or individually for £6.25. They are stored in a perfect little carry pouch.

The 'Night Time' (£6.25) and 'Relaxation' (£6.25) remedy oils are perfect for preparing for bed.

About two hours before bed, take the relaxation oil and roll it on all the key pulse points on your wrist and neck. When in bed apply the bedtime
aromatherapy oil in the same way. Over time the aromas of Lavender, geranium and bergamot will help to relax you so that sleep is a possibility.

My second tip is Molton Brown's travel range perfect for relaxation on the go.

I travel with work and the prospect of sleeping in a strange bed and environment plays havoc with my sleeping patterns and being able to fall asleep.

The relaxing Ylang Ylang (Yuan Zhi) bath and body lotion are perfect for getting your mind and body settled for bed. My personal favourites for chilling before bed after a hectic day is to spray Yuan Zhi on my pillow.

The temple soother does wonders for sending a calming aroma of lavender around the room and helps to clear your mind ready for a good nights sleep.

Other remedies that I use for when sleep evades me.

I have on my bedside shelf two products that if all else fails I turn to. The first of these consists of Badger sleep balm. Now Badger sleep balm does not have the strongest of smells but the very act of applying it is soothing.

My second is Rescue Remedy night spray, which comes in drops and a spray. I personally like the spray because in the dark I can find it and spray it on your tongue without having to turn on the light. Drops are slightly more challenging to administer.

Bach Rescue Night Spray
Now this could be entirely coincidental but when I spray the Rescue remedy I nearly always fall to sleep in around fifteen minutes.

Other tips for getting a good nights sleep...

I love nothing more than a nice cup of tea to relax and unwind at night but having one later than an hour before bed is not a good idea as it is a stimulant. The same goes for alcohol.

Make your bedroom a sleeping haven. Is it free from light and noise? Is it the right temperature? Too hot or too cold can mean that you will struggle to drift off.

Banish anything that activates your brain, turn off the TV, your phone and no surfing the web. Yes we know you love your blog but it's not going anywhere and it certainly won't help you go to sleep.

If your clock is in view move it or hide it. When you can't sleep seeing the hours roll by does nothing for reducing the stress and anxiety of not being able to sleep.

What do you do when you can't sleep? Share your tips and tricks with me. Wishing you all sweet dreams.

  6. I totally suffer from insomnia. I LOVE aromatherapy products. Thanks for sharing these! I am going to see if I can purchase online or from Amazon. I use the Bach Rescue Remedy for stress already. When I have a really terrible bout of sleeplessness, I take a prescription sleep aid. But only as a last resort. It is indeed an awful feeling tossing and turning, stressing about not being able to sleep! :(

  7. It really is not very nice and getting out of the pattern of not sleeping is quite hard. A sleep mist for the pillow is the way to go, I find that the smell of lavender or ylang ylang helps to relax so that sleep is easier x

    1. I have not tried Valerian root tea, what taste does it have? I love my tea and having an alternative with the added benefit of sleep at the end of it can't be bad Lucy x

  12. My biggest problem is turning off my laptop. So your tip to banish anything that might be distracting is a great one. I haven't tried aromatherapy as of yet, but it looks like it can be fun.
